Reduce Carbon Emissions by Closing the Local Paper Recycling Loop
Planet Ark has made it easy for you to reduce climate change causing carbon emissions with their 100% recycled copy paper.
It can be hard to get excited about environmental stuff sometimes, which is why it’s fantastic when someone else does it for you. Planet Ark is that someone else in Australia. Their passion for all things environmental has made such a difference since they started in 1992. Thanks to them we have an easy way to recycle ink cartridges, a National Tree Day, National Recycling Week in November, and now a 100% Australian recycled paper.
Closing the loop
Planet Ark’s goal in producing an Australian recycled copy paper is to close the local recycling loop. ‘Closing the recycling loop’ is sending waste paper from your workplace for local processing and then buying back the recycled copy paper made by that facility. When we close the local recycling loop, we can help reduce greenhouse gas transport emissions caused by importing recycled paper from overseas. We also help reduce unnecessary waste from ending up in landfill where it would otherwise decompose and add to greenhouse gas emissions. The local loop
In Australia, office workers alone use about 10,000 sheets of A4 paper per person each year, and around half of this ends up in landfill. A local system diverts waste from Australian landfill by keeping it in the “loop", recycling it here for further use.Waste not
Planet Ark has teamed up with Australian Paper to produce recycled paper locally in their Maryvale plant in Victoria. The plant has the capacity to take up to 80,000 tonnes of post-consumer waste a year – the equivalent of 16 billion sheets of A4 copy paper – that would otherwise end up in landfill or sent overseas for processing. It’s then pulped and processed in Australia to have any contaminants and ink removed before being made into high quality recycled paper. This local product doesn’t have to be shipped in from overseas, further reducing transport based carbon emissions.Quality, certified product
The paper they’re making is a high-quality product that performs reliably through a wide range of office printers. Not only is it 100% recycled, it is Chain of Custody FSC certified, and is Carbon Neutral under the National Carbon Offset scheme.Getting greener
Like most Aussies, you’re probably pretty good at recycling. Separating recyclables has become such a normal part of the Australian life now that we hardly give it a second thought. But did you know that we’re less diligent when it comes to actually buying recycled products? About 72% of office paper is recycled, but less than 1 in every 5 reams of copy paper sold in the Australian market contains significant recycled content. It could be a legacy from when recycled papers were significantly lower in quality. Recycled paper has come a long way since then and we recommend that paper buyers give Planet Ark a go.Playing our part
Planet Ark and Australian Paper are producing a high quality recycled paper that helps reduce carbon emissions, closing the local recycling loop requires market demand for recycled paper. It’s up to us to close the loop and keep it local by switching to an Australian recycled copy paper.Pledge your support today to choose Australian made recycled paper for your workplace: http://aussierecycledpaper.com.au/pledge
DID YOU KNOW?
The 3 chasing arrows that form the international symbol for recycling is in the shape of a loop because recycling can be an infinite process. It was the winning design for a competition in 1970 by university student, Gary Anderson. Each of the 3 arrows represents a step in the recycling process: collection, manufacture, and purchase. Without the last step, the recycling process is incomplete. Buying recycled products is the key to closing the loop.
