When we buy Australian made we’re directly supporting our local economy and local jobs. That’s why it’s so exciting that Planet Ark and Australian Paper have teamed up to produce a 100% Australian recycled copy paper. Not only is it great for the environment and helping to reduce carbon emissions, it carries the Australian made logo, so you know it’s been manufactured and not just packagedhere in Australia.
Maryvale Recycling FacilityIn 2015, Australian Paper opened its much-anticipated recycling facility at their Maryvale Mill in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley. The $90 million investment resulted in Australia’s only de-inking plant capable of manufacturing copy paper from local waste paper.
Aussie jobs and economyConstruction of the recycling facility was responsible for supporting 967 full time equivalent direct and indirect jobs, and the facility now supports 218 local full time staff in addition to staff at Australian Paper’s other operations. That’s two key industries in Australia – construction and manufacturing – they’ve supported by introducing a local 100% recycled copy paper. These industries, and the Australian economy, have been bolstered by an estimated $109.5 million (including flow-on) during construction, and $71.5 million per annum now that it is operational, adding to Australian Paper’s contribution of $911 million in GDP to the Australian economy.
Regional jobs and economyThese are regional jobs with a flow-on effect to the local community and economy, including local small businesses that are strengthened by the presence of a large, stable business. The Maryvale facility is one of the largest employers in the Latrobe Valley, a regional community in Victoria, 150km east of Melbourne, with a population of 74,000 people. Its impact extends to a contribution of $451 million annually to the economy of the Latrobe Valley region, encompassing the statistical areas of Baw Baw, Latrobe Valley and Wellington in Gippsland, with a population of almost 260,000. And then, as stated above, the greater impact on Australia nationally.
DemandWhere there is no Australian product, import is essential, but when an Australian made option is available, it’s important that Australians support it. Planet Ark and Australian Paper have filled a gap in the Australian market, producing a high quality, 100% recycled copy paper that is Australian made. Supply and demand is one of the most fundamental principles of economics. If we demand recycled paper that is made in Australia, voting with our wallets in favour of this product, we can directly impact the supply and help to secure Australian manufacturing and Australian jobs. We will also help to close the local recycling loop where Australian waste paper is collected, manufactured, and purchased back as locally made Planet Ark copy paper.
